Lost One Zero Did Art Series Overseen ByLost and Found: Calgarys FOONYAP explores identity, transformation and heritage with Free and Easy Wandering Back to video That chapter is called Free and Easy Wandering, which also happens to be the name of both the song and the arts series overseen by Edmonton-based Mile Zero Dance that inspired it. For me, that image represents the transformation of identity that is sometimes needed to move through the world, says FOONYAP, in an interview with Postmedia from her Calgary home. The idea of transformation is not a new one for the musician. She began playing violin as a precocious four-year-old before quitting at the age of 17 in an act of rebellion against her strict immigrant parents. Free and Easy Wandering seems to encompass the journey in one track. It starts with an unsettling, swelling storm of tangled violin before easing into flowing lines, soft strumming and a delicately sung melody. The song is the product of FOONYAPs participation in Free and Easy Wandering, an April residency that involved a dozen Alberta-based artists who were asked to explore how their Asian heritage contributed to their concepts of freedom and identity.
